Sony: Bringing lectures to life

When it comes to lectures, any academic will tell you that their ultimate aim is to inspire and empower students through knowledge. At the University of Bath, delivering the best experience means harnessing the latest technological resources to engage eager minds and bring lectures to life.

Dynamic education programme

Bath is one of the UK’s Top Ten universities, with over 15,000 enrolling in 2013, representing 100 nationalities. Priding itself on its academic achievement, world-class research, enterprise and creativity, it embraces new technology to deliver a modern, dynamic, education programme.

Creative, multimedia content

Recognising the growing importance of interactive teaching methods, Bath chose Sony as its partner to incorporate new projectors into its wider IT infrastructure and complement its already broad range of multimedia communication tools.

The university’s AV team explained that they chose Sony for our unrivalled expertise in the creation, editing, handling and distribution of digital content, and our understanding of how rich multi-media platforms create engaging learning environments.

High quality, low TCO

To create an immersive, informative and media-rich lecture environment, a fleet of powerful projectors was required. The University of Bath’s AV manager, Rob Hyde, said: “It was very important we find a solution that not only reduced TCO but also maintained a high performance, excellent image quality and compatibility with our existing technologies – and Sony products fit our needs best.”

A bespoke solution

The bespoke solution now features across all teaching spaces, and includes six VPL-FH500L and 51 x VPL-FH31 projectors. Both projectors fit seamlessly into any environment, offering exceptional brightness and long lamp life, thanks to our BrightEra Long Lasting Optics technology. Wide zoom and throw range, plus wide lens shift also help achieve the highest image quality – even in high ambient light.

Specialist integrator partner Reflex recommended Sony and Managing Director Ronald Dreesdon added: “When we design a complete AV system, we have to have the confidence in both the technology and the manufacturer products that we install. Sony met the brief perfectly and everyone is happy with the final solution.”

Future education projects

Now the solution is up and running, students and academics have expressed very positive feedback. We are now looking forward to working closely with the University of Bath to develop further solutions to meet the needs of their education programmes.
