Cutting-Edge Design at Hotelympia 2014

Hotelympia the UK’s most comprehensive event for the hospitality industry, is set to put world class design at the heart of its offering when it returns to London’s ExCeL in 2014 (28th April-1st May).

With a new date in the diary and a brand new four-day format, the show is set to unveil ‘Design at Hotelympia’ – a show-within-a-show, boasting a dedicated seminar programme and exhibitor line-up befitting of the very best in hospitality interior design. The return of the Hotelympia Design Award and the Design Lounge, alongside a host of new initiatives, will provide yet more highlights.

Content for the design theatre has been developed in partnership with the Society of British and International Design (SBID), the national representative organisation to the European Council of Interior Design and Architecture. There, a line up of high profile speakers – some of the most respected names in the business – will grace the stage to discuss and debate hot-button topics and trends including: design across the pond, Asia, the future of hotel design, cutting edge lighting, first impressions, kitchens, the new consumer and the evolution of new materials.

President of the SBID, Vanessa Brady, had this to say of the partnership: “The SBID is in full support of Hotelympia 2014. The brand new, dedicated space – Design at Hotelympia – sends a signal to the industry that this is a show that takes design seriously. As such, our members are greatly looking forward to finding inspiration from the exciting programme of events, speakers and initiatives.”

Making a welcome return to the fold is the Hotelympia Design Award. In 2012, the search was on to find the UK’s most luxurious suite, with the opulent, yet quintessentially English Royal Suite at London’s Mandarin Oriental taking the spoils. In 2014, the show turns its attention to the UK’s best designed new hotel. The award is open to all operators and designers who have launched a hotel within the last two years (since January 2012), this could be a new build, rebrand or retrofit.

Criteria will again be overseen by an expert panel of judges and will take in best use of space, lighting, bedroom design, restaurant and bar interiors, lobbies, corridors and overall impact. Entries are set to open at the end of October. Hotel operators are advised to visit for more details.

One exciting new development for 2014 is Art@Hotelympia – a programme of insightful talks spread across the four days that will focus on emerging art, how to uncover it, how and when to invest, and where best to display it – one not to miss for budding collectors.

Design at Hotelympia curator Stirling Johnstone, commented: “With brand new space, and a programme to put other shows in the shade, Design at Hotelympia will be the place to source the very latest products, glean vital inspiration and learn more about the trends setting the agenda. We’re of course delighted to have the backing of the SBID – an incredibly important association that works tirelessly to serve its members. It’s tremendously exciting to be working in partnership with them to bring the design fraternity a show that will live long in the memory.”

2014 will see Hotelympia move to a new four day format and be situated in one extended hall making it even easier for visitors to navigate the attractions without the disruption of the central boulevard. New, dedicated networking hubs will make the Hotelympia show-floor the UK’s biggest-ever hotbed of hospitality business activity.
