Optimise efficiency and profit on d&b

Looking beyond the material costs ‘up front’ could save contractors from potentially leaving themselves exposed and reducing their profit potential.

Protan, Europe’s third biggest roofing membrane manufacturer, has developed a unique package of solutions aimed at helping eliminate some of the issues increasingly being faced in design & build projects.

“Value engineer at the beginning of the project, not at the end,” suggests Protan managing director Fraser Maitland. “It’s not about just the material cost- how much labour is involved, what about ancillaries eg fixings…? They all contribute to the cost of the job, and if not properly considered, cause confrontation and disputes when specifications are changed to meet the cost constraints on site and beyond.”

Protan’s unique combination comprises its Proplan roof design software and its prefabricated single ply solutions.

Proplan produces an autoCAD 2D or 3D visualisation of the proposed roof, detailed specification of materials, the quotation plus manufacturing and site assembly details.

The system embraces detailing such as corners, perimeters and penetrations, providing accurate estimating of the total roof cost, and allows comparison between roofing techniques. So the designer and contractor can obtain the most efficient way to build the roof, with optimum logistics, installation and virtually zero on-site wastage.

Protan’s unique prefabricated membrane is factory welded to order, in the most efficient combination of width, length, and roll size. This minimises on-site labour, and wastage and optimises quality control over external influences of workmanship, detailing, weather etc. Yet Protan prefabricated membrane costs no more than conventional standard overlap.

“Using available resources at the outset can go a long way to giving a valid cost for the job, that will help at least minimise potential areas for dispute further down the line,” adds Fraser. “Protan’s whole ethos is about professionalism, and working in partnership to help customers deliver and receive optimum value. Proplan and prefabricated solutions do that.”

Established some 75 years ago, and privately-owned, Protan is one of the top 3 membrane manufacturers in Europe. Manufactured at the company’s headquarters in Norway, Protan has roofs that have been in place for 30+ years without performance-affecting degradation. A full support service, from NBS specification and in-house CAD design through to technical advice is provided from Protan UK’s Warrington office.
